See My Brain Being Devoured By Rabid Gophers!!!

McCloud parodies galore:

Marky Mark Britches (in which the aforementioned can actually be witnessed) by the incomparable Mark Martin is still my favorite McCloud parody.

Recent entries: Check out the Checkerboard Nightmare's September 2, 2002 strip for one of the most colorful parodies so far -- and one of the funniest.

Scott Kurtz's PVP comic book (as opposed to the webcomic) had a funny and cool McCloud-as-the-Oracle bit in #5's Matrix parody. Not to be outdone, Dork Tower did a whole issue (#18) on "Understanding Gamers" with the inevitable cameo appearance by Yours Truly, the original Dork.

Penny Arcade posted a great parody of I Can't Stop Thinking (followed by a nasty text piece, unfortunately). This triggered Jack Master's great parody, and then R. Stevens' great parody in Diesel Sweeties!

Low Jinx #2: Understanding The Horrible Truth about Reinventing Mini-Comics. One of the best mini-comics of 2000 includes a sharp, funny take-off on UC chapter 1 by Kurt Wolfgang and a great cover illo of me being stapled to death!

Reinventing Zippy: "Is my head in the McClouds yet?" YOW! Bill Griffith's Zippy the Pinhead takes me on big time in his Nov 26, 2000 Sunday strip!

Filibusting Comics: Fantagraphics published this one back in the mid-90's. Some funny parts, some lame parts, but definitely worth getting if you can find it. Written and drawn by one "Dylan Sisson." (Uh-huh.)

Other "guest appearances" have included "Understanding Fight Scenes" in Normalman vs. Megaton Man by Simpson and Valentino; a panel of "me" in a strip club in the Beavis and Butthead comic; and a whole lot of others I'm forgetting right now...

The Name Game

Here are just a few of the better-known comics artists who've appended their name -- and only their name -- with a ".com" (or similar suffix). This isn't even close to complete, but I thought it might be a fun list to compile:

The Legendary Dewan Brothers!

Ted
Brian

The Legendary Dewan Brothers are my oldest friends on the planet!! We grew up three houses apart in Lexington Massachusetts. I met Ted when I was 1 year old.

Ted lives in London with his brilliant and beautiful wife, Helen and brilliant and beautiful daughter Pandora. Both Ted and Helen are celebrated children's book authors/illustrators.

Brian is perhaps my all-time favorite cartoonist, though he's busier these days making incredible MUSIC, hilarious haunting filmstrips and big baffling installations. Brian created the monument seen on the cover of the They Might Be Giants' second album Lincoln and painted the cover for David Byrne's Uh-Oh, among many other strange and wonderful accomplishments.

Chris Bing, too!

...and right between The Dewan house and ours was the equally amazing Chris Bing, whose new illustrated adaptation of Casey at the Bat was just named a Caldecott Honor Book for 2001! Congratulations, Chris!
