If it was the Only Movie Out this Year…

…it would still be a pretty good year for movies.

  1. I saw it for my city’s (Wellington) film festival, and was thoroughly blown away. I also saw Adventureland and Mary and Max, and this was the best by far.

My favourite aspects were the beautifully rendered water, and Ponyo’s excited exclamations of “Sosuke!”

Some cool news on your favorite GN of the year from NPR.

I’ve had a surprisingly good time at the movies this lately.
Saw Ponyo less then week ago. F-ing brilliant. And yesterday saw district 9. Also F-ing brilliant. Though in a rather different way.

Ponyo had the look of a childhood fantasy. Studio Gibley movies put a tremendous amount of thought into color choice. One of the reasons each movie has such a unique feel. I loved the pastels. I noticed that some of the backgrounds were colored less solidly than in some movies giving it this slight scribbly feel.

Yeah love this this guy’s movies but was iffy. Now with good reviews I most see it!

Totally with you there, Scott. I saw Ponyo last weekend, and it was wonderful. So pure in its imagination, imagery, and portrayal of the link between childhood and the forces of nature. Impressively, every kid in the audience was transfixed by it – no yelling, crying, fussing, running around etc. This helped make in one of the best experiences I’ve ever had watching a G-rated film at the theater. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Yea, saw it today, not his best work but still good.
